Butker's Commencement Speech Stirs Controversy
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has sparked outrage after making anti-LGBTQ remarks in a commencement speech at Benedictine College.
In the speech, which was delivered on May 12, Butker criticized diversity initiatives and President Joe Biden.
“We have to fight against these woke ideologies that are being pushed on our children,” Butker said.
Butker's remarks were met with widespread condemnation from LGBTQ advocates and allies.
“This is a dangerous and hateful message,” said GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis. “Butker's words contribute to a climate of fear and discrimination against LGBTQ people.”
The Chiefs organization has yet to comment on Butker's speech.
Butker, 28, is a Pro Bowl kicker who has been with the Chiefs since 2017.
